Trail running on Emerald Mountain, the morning before Steamboat's famous gravel race
SBT TRL is the trail running event of SBT GRVL weekend in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Starting from historic Howelsen Hill, runners choose a 20k, a 12k or a family 5k run and walk on the Emerald Mountain trail system.
SBT TRL brings trail running to the heart of SBT GRVL, one of the best known gravel cycling weekends in North America. On Saturday morning, the start is given at 8:00 at the foot of Howelsen Hill, the oldest continuously operating ski area in Colorado, right in downtown Steamboat Springs.
All three courses climb into the Emerald Mountain trail network, a maze of singletrack through aspen groves, scrub oak and open meadows overlooking the Yampa Valley. The 20k packs about 600 m of climbing, the 12k around 350 m, while the 5k is a relaxed run or walk open to families, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. Racing at around 2,000 m of altitude adds its own bite.
Awards are held in Little Toots Park on the banks of the Yampa, and the weekend does not stop there: the SBT DBL BLK Challenge rewards the fastest man and woman combining the 20k with Sunday's Black Course on the bike. Proceeds benefit the Steamboat Springs Running Series, a non profit promoting trail running in the mountains of northern Colorado.
