Sandstone ridges, rhododendron tunnels, and raw Appalachian wilderness in the heart of Pennsylvania
Rothrock by UTMB brings the UTMB World Series to Pennsylvania's Rothrock State Forest, a 95,000 acre wilderness of sandstone ridges, fern valleys, and ancient rhododendron tunnels near State College. Born from the beloved Rothrock Trail Challenge established in 2009, this event offers a 50K and 25K on rugged Appalachian singletrack that is as wild as it is beautiful.
Rothrock by UTMB is the newest addition to the UTMB World Series calendar, set in the sprawling 95,000 acres of Rothrock State Forest in central Pennsylvania. Starting and finishing at Tussey Mountain, the courses wind through some of the most stunning and untamed terrain on the East Coast: sandstone ridges with sweeping mountain views, fern covered valleys shaded by centuries old hemlocks, towering cliffs, serene stream crossings over rustic log bridges, and the iconic rhododendron tunnels that give this forest its enchanting character.
The 50K traverses the legendary Tussey Ridge Trail, loops through Bear Meadows Natural Area (a National Natural Landmark home to a rare boreal bog thousands of years in the making), and cruises along the John Wert Path before reaching Highline Vista. The 25K delivers an equally intense experience, opening with Spruce Gap, an 800 foot climb in under a mile, then threading along the rocky Mid State Trail ridge tops and descending through the boulders and ledges of Shingletown Cliffs. Both courses demand focus, fortitude, and a love for technical, rooty, rocky trail.
Built on the legacy of the Rothrock Trail Challenge, a community driven race that has been a cornerstone of Pennsylvania trail running since 2009, Rothrock by UTMB carries that same spirit of camaraderie and rugged adventure onto the world stage. The May timing catches the forest at its most vibrant, with blooming mountain laurel, lush spring foliage, and perfect conditions for a pure, wild trail experience in the heart of Appalachia.
