Centuries of history beneath your feet: an ultra trail along the Great Wall and the grasslands of northern China
The Ultra Trail Great Wall by UTMB takes runners along ancient Ming Dynasty fortifications and through the sweeping grasslands of Hebei Province, starting from Dajingmen, one of the four great passes of the Great Wall of China. The course weaves between crumbling watchtowers, alpine meadows of the Grassland Sky Road, secluded valleys, and the historic Zhangku Avenue, once known as the Grassland Silk Road.
The Ultra Trail Great Wall by UTMB is a UTMB World Series event set along one of the most iconic structures ever built by humankind. Starting from Dajingmen in Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, the courses carry runners along ancient Ming Dynasty Great Wall fortifications, past crumbling beacon towers, and through landscapes that have stood at the crossroads of Chinese civilization for over a thousand years. Dajingmen, meaning "the gate standing on the border," is one of the four great passes of the Great Wall, a place where the central plains once met the Mongolian frontier and where traders exchanged silks and tea for furs and silver.
The terrain is as diverse as the history it traverses. Runners climb along restored and ruined wall sections, cross the alpine meadows of the Grassland Sky Road, follow pasture trails through secluded valleys, and trace the ancient Zhangku Avenue, historically known as the Grassland Silk Road. The 100K course covers nearly 4,000 m of elevation gain across a landscape that shifts from fortified ridgelines to wide open grasslands, with distances ranging from the 30K to the flagship 100K.
Set in the mountains north of Beijing, near the venues that hosted the 2022 Winter Olympics, the Ultra Trail Great Wall offers a trail running experience unlike any other: one where every step carries the weight of centuries and every summit reveals the endless ribbon of the Wall stretching across the horizon. It is a race where sport meets heritage, and where the beauty of northern China's frontier landscapes leaves a lasting impression on every runner who crosses the finish line.
